Coke 8

Whilst in the departure lounge at Akrotiri in somewhat sombre mood, we asked Kyle what drink he wanted from the kiosk.  He replied that he wanted Coke 8.  We were confused and said that there was no such drink, but he insisted he wanted one.  Exasperated, Elena told him to point to the bottle he wanted, which was apparently on the third shelf.  Finally, she realised he was pointing to this:

Blue faced over money

20090706-picture

There is a story behind this picture, so here it is:

That's me on my paraglider. Apparently, when I'm on my paraglider I am thinking about money, hence the pound signs (I thought they were Euro signs, but Elena assures me that she was showing him what pound signs looked like recently, so I guess that’s what they are).  I am thinking so hard about money that my face has gone blue and then I crashed, but was alright, except that I have torn my (left) shirt sleeve and hurt my knee. Kyle rescued me and took me to the hospital.  So far as I can tell, that is the full story, so errr... the end!

Innocence

The other day, whilst watching ‘Brainjitsu’, a sort of thinking child’s competition programme (on BFBS 3 kids’ ‘room785’), in which contestants compete to be last ‘man’ standing and thus win thru’ a series of mental and physical challenges, the competitors were down to two, a boy and a girl.  Normally, in this situation, Kyle announces that he wants the boy to win, however this day he said he wanted the girl to win.  “Oh, why is that?”  I asked.  “because”, he said, “I don’t like little boys to be brown!”  EeeeeK!   I thought.  We’ll need to have a little chat about that, but ultimately, I am not too concerned, since three of his best friends are Fijian and therefore, of a rather ‘dusky’ pigment!  Suffice to say, he never batted an eyelid at this exclamation and didn’t feel it needed any explanation and neither did I ask for one.  Kids will be kids and what is perceived as a terrible prejudice by adults, can actually be nothing at all to a child.  If we, as adults didn’t get so excited and bang on about things like this (yes I’ve said it before, learned a lesson from our kids) I reckon the world would be a much better place!  Truth be told, I found it quite funny!

Catch up

I’ve been a bit remiss just lately, not posted any Kyloisms for some time now.  A couple that ‘popped up’ just recently were:  Like when we were having breakfast a week or so ago and the subject wandered on to mothers and babies, with there being so many expectant mums around.  Elena turned to Kyle and said, “Yes, you really kicked a lot when you were in mummy’s tummy Kylo”.  He replied, “Yeah, I’m really so sorry for that mummy!”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Just the other evening we were in Derynia for a meal with Mike, Magda and friends at the Stonegrill restaurant.  We have never been there before and didn’t know quite what to expect, but the food was very lovely as it turned out.  Soon my steak and a few other steaks arrived sitting on top of a super-preheated stone, sizzling wildly.  “Are you having a barbecue daddy?”  was Kyle’s innocent reaction.  Kids grow so fast, I wonder when he’ll stop saying these little things that amuse us so much.  Not until he’s at least twenty I hope, carry on the comedy Kylo!

Picker

Some few days before our trip up to the northern territories, Elena had asked Kyle if he was going to be an architect or a doctor and look after his mum and dad when they were older.  “No”, he replied, “I’m going to be a picker”.  Mum and dad looked at each other bewildered and asked “what are you going to pick?”  “Figs!” came the response.  We were slightly less than impressed at his choice of career and hoped that he would forget.  During our visit to the ‘Turkish Republic’, the subject came up again, and he again insisted, “I’m going to be a fig picker”.  Well, it’s nice to have ambition Kyle I must say!

Hatching

We stopped off in Kyrenia for our first night on our little tour of the north and spent the night in The Teacher’s House hotel in the east end of town.  In morning we enjoyed a breakfast on the patio and Kyle had some salad stuffs and a hard boiled egg.  On closer examination of his egg, he noticed a little crack in the shell and asked in a loud voice, “Why is it already hatching?”  This made me laugh a bit, I must confess!  For pictures, see Cypriot Times blog.

Outer space

Kyle, obviously over-tired and clearly upset with Elena, was engaging in a bit of an exchange with her, which I elected to keep out of.  “Go and live in another house!” he said to her, “for ever!”  Then after a moment’s pause, clearly not satisfied with the distance he’d managed to express, he added, “or outer space!”  Children just don’t seem to have a rational grasp of the ‘hurt factor’, when they inflict their abuse.  Meanwhile, I was biting my lip, trying to stifle my amusement.  Needless to say, Elena didn’t share my enjoyment!

Ski whizz

We went up to Troodos kind of on a whim.  We  were going to go to Ikea for a few items but, seeing the thick frosting of snow on Olympus, we decided to check out the slopes instead.  Kyle took to the skis really quickly and managed very well indeed, we’re very proud of our smart little boy and I am very pleased to have got him on skis, I’ve been wanting to get him started for ages now.

Shrimps

We couldn’t decide what to have for tea, so finally elected Chinese take away.  Whilst eating the ‘special’ fried rice I tried to persuade Kyle to eat the shrimps.  Now, Kyle has eaten shrimps before, so I tried to convince him that he had eaten them and liked them.  Finally, sensing I was getting annoyed, he conceded and in order to please me announced; “I do like them dad”, “Good”, I said, “Shrimps are my favourite vegetable!”, he added happily.  Needless to say, he still didn’t eat all of it, kids!

Racing snake

20090316_Kylo_injury3

I got a call not long before the end of work on Monday.  Elena, sounding a bit upset, telling me Kyle had a nasty fall off his bike and I should come and meet them at the Medical Centre.  When I arrived he was up on the bed, with the nurse cleaning his wounds and clearly feeling quite sorry for himself, with a cut and swollen lip, a nick under his nose and a nice big scratch on his forehead.  He didn’t even seem to respond too happily when she said that we should give him some ice pops to cool the lip and help reduce the swelling.  Later though, after a bath and some more TLC at home, he began to cheer up.  Little dare devil that he is!

Goldilocks

Not really a Kyloism, just that I’m so proud I thought I’d publish it.  Today is the first day I heard Kyle read a book from cover to cover.  Only Goldilocks and the three bears, but I was still impressed!  He’s so pleased with himself that he just wants to keep on reading more and more now.   Long may it last!

Soft furnishings

Kylo tends to refer to his beloved pillow as his 'cushion'.  We've tried to point out the difference between bedroom and lounge furnishings, but to him they're all one and the same; cushions.  Elena was telling him the other day, that pillows are what we find upstairs, while cushions are downstairs.  He tends to love his 'cushion' and snuggle up to it anywhere as a sort of comforter, so the other evening as he was settling in bed he said, very sweetly and politely, "Mummy, would you get my cushion for me please?"  "Pillow", said Elena.  Kyle replied, "No mummy, it's downstairs, so it's a cushion!"  Funny, but very sweet!

Ruined

After a shouting tantrum, Elena was left with very little choice but to resort to a smacked bum.  Kyle’s response was, “Mum, you’ve ruined my world!”  I’m not sure exactly where he got this from, but I suppose we got the gist of what he meant!

Moon

20090102Amathous01

Walking along the coastal footpath at Amathous, Kyle seemed a bit preoccupied with the moon in the southwestern sky.  After a few minutes he stopped in his tracks, a serious look on his face and exclaimed, "Why does the moon keep following us?"  I'm sure I've wondered the very same thing on a number of occasions, but always been embarrassed to ask!
